Work permit
To be eligible for a Canadian work permit, you generally need a valid job offer from a Canadian employer before you can submit your application. Depending on the type of work permit, the employer may also need to obtain a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or submit an offer of employment through an LMIA-exempt program.
There are exceptions. Some foreign nationals may qualify for an open work permit, which allows them to work for most employers in Canada without having a job offer in advance. Examples include certain spouses of skilled workers or international students, participants in specific international agreements, and individuals eligible under special public policies.
If you do not yet have a job offer, your first step is usually to search for employment and apply directly to Canadian employers. Our career page database can help you identify employers that post job opportunities on their own websites, allowing you to apply directly at the source.
