Social security number
If you are authorized to work or study in Canada, you may be eligible to apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN). A SIN is a unique nine-digit number issued by the Government of Canada that is required to work legally in Canada, receive employment income, and access certain government programs and benefits.
You can apply for a SIN:
- Online
- In person at a Service Canada Centre
- By mail
When applying, you will generally need to provide proof of your identity and your legal status in Canada, such as a work permit, study permit (if eligible), permanent resident card, or other accepted immigration document.
